Port-wine stain (also known as PWS) is a common types  of birthmark in the skin due to abnormally formed finer blood vessels which may imitate the colour of port-wine, hence its peculiar name. If PWS if left untreated then it will remain with the individual for the rest of their life, although their colour may change over time to dark red, then purple and then brown; sometimes they may develop into tiny bumps on the skin, but this is not a frequent occurrence amongst sufferers. PWS is mostly discovered at birth, and there are only a handful of cases which have been reported later in life, at which point it is then called acquired port-wine stain.

The specific cause of PWS is not fully defined but one line of thought says that it is due to the nerves controlling the intricate network of blood vessels, that don’t off following chemical signals in these nerves. Henceforth, these fine blood vessels enlarge to give the colour of port-wine stains. If PWS is around the eyes it may cause glaucoma (raised eye ball pressure), and if this is the case, please consult your local GP for assistance. Furthermore, you may wish to seek help locally in order to treat PWS, but you may find that the treatment options are not widely available and people generally have to travel long distances to find a centre who have a pulsed-dye laser (PDL) to treat this condition.
